What's new in reelsdk

Everything that changed in reelsdk, the video rendering API that bills from $0.01 a minute, newest first: 16 updates since the first release on 25 October 2026, each written as what it changes for you.

Latest

Right-to-left captions, shorts that resume after a restart, and caption limits that hold.

7 updates

  1. Captions in six more scripts

Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Devanagari, Lao and Myanmar captions get matching Noto Sans faces. Arabic and Hebrew run right to left, with the karaoke fill sweeping the same way, and sentence marks in Arabic, Devanagari and Myanmar break captions like a full stop.

  2. ImprovedShorts

Shorts pick up where they left off

If a short is interrupted mid-job by a restart on our side, it picks up from its last finished step instead of starting over. Lost stills are redrawn, a lost voiceover is voiced again, and usage adds up across attempts.

  3. ImprovedShorts

Clear limits for scripts and scenes

Scripts are capped at 90 seconds of narration, and the cap is now in the OpenAPI spec and /llms.txt. Plans with more scenes than the cap are folded into it, and each job gets its own image budget.

  4. ImprovedCaptions

    Three-letter language codes

Three-letter language codes now get the right font and text direction, the same as two-letter codes.

  5. Caption limits hold to the last word

max_words, cue length and line limits now also apply after a trailing word is merged into the caption before it.

  6. FixedAPI

A failed audio mix fails the job

When the audio mix fails, the render now stops with an error instead of carrying on.

  7. FixedShorts

    Voiceover length in usage

usage.audio_seconds on a short now reports the length of its voiceover.

The first release: slideshows, captions and raw ffmpeg, then faceless shorts the same day.

9 updates

  1. ImprovedAPI

    Browsers land on the website

Opening reelsdk.com in a browser shows this site, also for links with ?ref= or utm tags, while API clients that ask for JSON at / still get the API index.

  2. FixedSite

    Demo videos play in Safari

The demo videos on this site are served with byte ranges, which Safari needs to play them.

  3. FixedAPI

Output links play in a Chrome tab

Opening a video or audio link from /f/ in Chrome now plays it in the browser's own viewer.

  4. ImprovedAPI

Limits and a sandbox for every key

Every key has its own limits: 3 jobs at once, 500 jobs and 5 GiB of uploads a day. Raw ffmpeg commands run in a sandbox, uploads are checked against a list of allowed media types, and input URLs that point at private networks are refused.

  5. Faceless shorts from a topic

POST /v1/shorts turns a topic or your own script into a finished short: script, AI images, voiceover, word-by-word captions and music, in 8 visual styles and 6 languages.

  6. Japanese, Chinese and Korean captions

Captions in Japanese, Chinese and Korean use Noto Sans JP, SC and KR, and lines break between the transcriber's tokens, since those scripts don't put spaces between words.

  7. ImprovedCaptions

    No more lonely last words

A single word left over at the end now joins the caption before it instead of showing up on its own.

  8. ImprovedSlideshow

    Crossfades centred on the cut

Slideshow crossfades are now centred on the boundary between two photos.

  9. NewAPI

First release: slideshows, captions and raw ffmpeg

POST /v1/slideshow, /v1/captions and /v1/ffmpeg, each running on a fresh machine with ffmpeg 8.1. Wait for the result, poll the job or get a signed webhook, and download outputs for 7 days. Voiceovers are made in parallel chunks while the machine starts.
